Route description

Berliner Hütte  2.044 m  (AT)

The Berlin hut still has a very authentic character. It is the first mountain hut of the Deutsche Alpenverein. It was Built in 1879 and has been extended several times since then. In 1997 a charter was written in order to secure the character of the hut an to restore it if necessary. It is the only building which still completely possesses the atmosphere from the turn of the century.

Berlin hut 1879: the glacier reached much deeper into the vally.

The interior of the dining room and the former "Damensalon" are pearls of the old Zillertaler architecture. It perfectly shows the elitist character of mountaineering at the beginning of the 20th century.

The hall (interior from the beginning of the 20th century).

To admire this pearl of mountaineering history an excursion to the hut is worth the trouble. The way to the hut is an easy hike on a wide path. Starting at the car park in Breilahner, the path first leads through a forest and after that to the Zemmgrundtal. So far there are no difficulties as the path is not very steep. The difference in altitude (1636 meters) to the Grawandhütte is overcome by the long distance. The path from the Grawandhütte leads on to the Alpenrose Hütte, which is located at an altitude of 1873 meters. After that the wide path stops. From here another 200 meters have to be climbed via a smaller path. After the path bends the wonderfully situated Berlin hut emerges. I repeat again: a peace of mountaineering history. The hike can easily be managed with children.
